MARK O'Connor-The American Seasons Music CD

MARK O'Connor-The American Seasons Music CD

Barnes & Noble
If you’ve grown tired of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, and Glazunov’s Seasons don’t appeal, you might want to give Mark O’Connor’s American Seasons a try. Like Vivaldi’s popular work, O’Connor’s is a collection of concertos for violin and string orchestra. But by drawing on Appalachian fiddling traditions, he has created a vibrant set of picture postcards whose scenery is unmistakably American. “Spring” is a jig-like dance; “Summer” has a lazy atmosphere (with a subtle nod to Gershwin’s “Summertime”); “Fall” is full of melancholy lyricism, and “Winter” feels frisky and festive. Strings and Threads, an extended suite of 13 dances, is more overtly folksy — a real charmer. A new arrangement for string orchestra of Appalachia Waltz closes the disc on a quiet note, like a homespun benediction. It’s very beautifully played — as is the rest of the program — by the Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra led by conductor Scott Yoo. Andrew Farach-Colton

This is a brand new CD still in the original packaging.  Our price on this new music CD is only $4.00.

KING KONG-Original Motion Picture Soundtrack CD

KING KONG-Original Motion Picture Soundtrack CD

All Music Guide
Composer James Newton Howard (Batman Begins, Sixth Sense, The Fugitive) has helmed his fair share of action films, but none as daunting as director Peter Jackson’s gargantuan remake of King Kong. Not only was he rescoring the life and death of one of cinema’s most beloved icons; he had to do it in less than two months. Longtime Jackson collaborator Howard Shore, who took home an Oscar for his work on the Lord of the Rings trilogy, left Kong in a flurry of “creative differences” with the director, scoring just over an hour of material. Keeping that fact in mind, Howard’s compositions are nothing short of remarkable. While they lack Shore’s epic scope and his myriad of complex and highly melodic character cues, Howard manages to pinch-hit his way through with the confidence of a starting player. Using the Depression era as a launching pad, he deftly whips jazz motifs, thunderous brass sections, and wistful choirs into a stew of “silver screen”-meets-”blue screen” harmony that may not yield any memorable themes, but manages to illuminate the film’s terror, humanity, and tragedy with irrefutable professionalism. Amy Grant-Lead Me On-20th Anniversary Edition-CD

All Music Guide
It’s not unusual to come away from an Amy Grant album with a feeling of hope and steadfastness in the world around, but, with this release, truly one of her best, Grant makes an unexpected departure. From the first notes of the album’s opener, “1974,” a song about her discovery of faith, one feels as though Grant has left behind the pop sounds of this album’s predecessor, Unguarded, and entered territory more familiar to her Nashville roots. The music is more organic; acoustic guitars play amid mandolins, combined, at times, with their electric cousins, joined with lyrics that possess both wisdom and wondering, while the production gives this fully digital recording the warmth of an LP on a turntable. Although it’s hard to single out specific songs from such a solid collection, there are certainly highlights for the listener to savor. The title track sings of a faith that calls for complete trust, while “Shadows” speaks of life choices and being cognizant of one’s darker side. “Saved by Love” and “If These Walls Could Speak” are a celebration of family and the ties that bind told in haunting and somewhat melancholic ways, whereas “Faithless Heart,” one of the more personal portraits on the album, talks of being drawn away from one’s commitment to another in times of trouble, and finding the strength to stay. “All Right,” a tune spiced with the flavor of Southern rock, plays as an anthem for the troubled soul in need of fulfillment, while the album’s closer, “Say Once More,” generates a longing in its lyrics for finding the love of another (not necessarily romantic), and wanting only to be enriched by knowing the person more in life, whether near or far. As much as her fans are used to finding themselves within her music, along with solutions to life’s sometimes difficult problems, Grant uses this album to ask the questions, while leaving the answers to a higher power. A stellar outing that received the 1988 Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance by a Female. [This 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition released in 2008 came packaged with one 12-track bonus disc.] ~ Daniel Malich, All Music Guide
