MARK O'Connor-The American Seasons Music CD
Barnes & Noble
If you’ve grown tired of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, and Glazunov’s Seasons don’t appeal, you might want to give Mark O’Connor’s American Seasons a try. Like Vivaldi’s popular work, O’Connor’s is a collection of concertos for violin and string orchestra. But by drawing on Appalachian fiddling traditions, he has created a vibrant set of picture postcards whose scenery is unmistakably American. “Spring” is a jig-like dance; “Summer” has a lazy atmosphere (with a subtle nod to Gershwin’s “Summertime”); “Fall” is full of melancholy lyricism, and “Winter” feels frisky and festive. Strings and Threads, an extended suite of 13 dances, is more overtly folksy — a real charmer. A new arrangement for string orchestra of Appalachia Waltz closes the disc on a quiet note, like a homespun benediction. It’s very beautifully played — as is the rest of the program — by the Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra led by conductor Scott Yoo. Andrew Farach-Colton
This is a brand new CD still in the original packaging. Our price on this new music CD is only $4.00.
